Music is likely to play an effective role by helping us to lead better and fruitful lives. Music can make us dance or help us to remind of a moment from many years ago. Parents are likely to sing music to babies in order to make them sleep. In short music can do many things such as it can thrill us and excite us, it can calm and relax us, it can make us smile and bring us to tears. However, listening to specific kinds of music at specific times of the day has proved to be helpful in maintaining good health. In fact Indian music with its many ragas is considered to be a particular therapy. Meditation with music is of much benefit to our body and mind. Here are some ways which will help you to mediate with music.
- In order to mediate with music it is important to choose a good piece of meditation music or meditative, inspirational, instrumental music. Instrumental music is likely to stimulate the activity of our right brain while lyrical music stimulates the activity of our left brain. While meditating you require balanced mind which is burdened by the hectic modern lifestyle. So instrumental music is likely to relax your mind so that you can meditate well.
- You require a quiet and peaceful place so that you can meditate with music. You should switch off your phone and make sure that you are not being disturbed or interrupted by anybody. You should search for a comfortable and relaxed position either to sit or lie for half an hour. The more relaxed you are, the more beneficial is your meditation with music because at that position you will be able to able to grasp the music vibration better. Before you meditate, you must focus your attention on each part of your body, starting with the feet and moving up to the top of your head, while you breathe deeply but slowly.
- While meditating you must listen to your meditative music with headphones, at a comfortable volume. You can even use a cassette deck, a CD player or an iPod to meditate with music. However it is essential to use a pair of good quality of headphones so that you can hear better musical vibrations. If you are using an iPod then make sure that your selected music has been converted by your iPod system.
- While meditating with music you should follow diaphragmatic breathing. It is also called belly breathing. You should inhale through your nostrils, direct your breath into your abdomen and feel it rise and while exhaling through your nostrils, feel your abdomen fall.
- You should try to relax yourself. While mediating you should not worry by thinking, visualizing or doing anything. Meditation with music is not about “doing” but about “being”.
- Do not let the different thoughts come to your mind while meditating with music. You should pass away the thoughts and try to focus on the music. You should allow the sounds to be your mantra. If your thoughts are directing in to the past or future then you should direct your thoughts in the present moment.

- When you have reached to the entrainment point then you should enjoy it. You should stay in that position as long as you feel good. These are the signals of the release of stress. If you fall asleep, do not worry as it is also a sign of releasing stress. If you like then you can end up your meditation with music at this point. You would feel refreshed afterwards and would go back to your daily life in better position.
- At the entrainment point, there are many people who wish to go further and incorporate visualization tools to meditate with music. This visualization helps you to reach to a specific goal. You should do this when you reach the entrainment point as it could transform into a mere exercise of will power. While doing so, you should vividly imagine the experiences you want to have. . Your desires must be honest and aligned with the highest good of all, pursuant to the law of unity.
- Once your meditation with music ends, do not rush back into your daily life immediately. You have to ground and assimilate the energy so remain still for several minutes. If you meditated with your eyes closed, gently open them and let them adjust to the light. You should slowly stretch each major part of your body and then sit or lie quietly for about five minutes. You will notice and enjoy how relaxed, refreshed and strengthen you feel.
